Family Road Trip: 3 Things To Do To Your Vehicle To Help Prevent Being Stranded Waiting For A Tow Truck

Savannah Wilson

A family road trip is an opportunity to spend time together and make memories that will last a lifetime. When your family vacation requires driving long distances, the last thing you want is for your vehicle to break down and need to be towed to an auto repair center or shop. Luckily, being proactive before your road trip can greatly reduce the likelihood of you and your family being left stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck when you're supposed to be having a fun vacation. Use the following tips to help ensure that your vehicle won't need to be towed on your next road trip:

Have the Battery and Alternator Tested

An easy thing to do before a family vacation that requires a road trip is having your alternator and battery tested to ensure that they are functioning properly and fully charged. This will help ensure that you don't stop at a remote rest stop only to discover that your vehicle won't start up when it is time to get back on the road. Many auto parts retailers offer alternator and battery testing for free, so make sure to put this task on your to-do list before setting off on your trip.

Check Your Car's Coolant Levels

When you're driving hundreds or even thousands of miles to reach your vacation destination, there can be a lot of stress on your car's engine. An automobile engine needs to be kept at a certain temperature to prevent overheating, which can cause a lot of damage to the engine while also making the vehicle unable to run properly. A vehicle's coolant level should always be checked and topped off as needed before taking an extended road trip.

Pay Attention to Your Vehicle's Tires

Tires play an extremely important role in the safety and function of a car, and they should be carefully inspected prior to any type of road trip vacation. Make sure that your tires have plenty of tread and don't have any bald spots or areas of uneven wear. It is also a very good idea to check the tire pressure of each tire, and add air if needed.

While these steps can't guarantee that you won't get a flat tire in the middle of nowhere, they do make it much more likely that you will reach your destination without having to hire a tow truck.
