Common Signs Of A Failed Ignition Coil

Savannah Wilson

An ignition coil plays a major role in a vehicle's ignition system -- its responsibility is to take a low amount of voltage from the battery and transform it into the large voltage that is needed to power all of the spark plugs. In most cases, an ignition coil will last for a long time, but like any part on an automobile it will eventually fail and need to be replaced. Since an ignition coil serves an important purpose, you should have a faulty ignition coil replaced as soon as possible; failure to do so can cause significant damage to other systems in your vehicle that can be quite costly to repair. Some of the most common signs that an ignition coil needs to be replaced include the following:

Noticeable Change in Gas Mileage

After an ignition coil provides the voltage that the spark plugs need, the spark plugs ensure that the engine starts and properly combusts fuel. When an ignition coil is failing or faulty, the voltage supplied to the spark plugs is erratic, which leads to uneven fuel combustion. As a result, the engine can begin using more fuel than normal. If you notice that your vehicle is getting poor gas mileage and you need to stop by the gas station more often to fill up your gas tank, it is a good idea to have the ignition coils in your vehicle checked out at an auto repair shop to determine if one or more have failed and need to be replaced.

Regular Engine Misfires

When spark plugs are not properly powered by the ignition coils, the engine will most likely misfire. If the engine misfires, you may hear an odd sputtering sound. An engine misfire can also result in vibration inside the vehicle when the car is idling or stopped. When driving at high speeds, an engine misfire may cause the car to jerk or hesitate. It is never a good idea to continue to drive a vehicle that is experiencing engine misfires. The best thing that you can do is take your car to an auto repair shop at the first sign of engine misfires.

Stalling

One of the most inconvenient signs of a bad ignition coil is stalling. In the event that one or more ignition coils have failed, your vehicle may begin stalling when you come to a stop and the car is idling. When a vehicle stalls due to a bad ignition coil, it can be very difficult to restart. If your vehicle stalls and you don't know what caused the stall, have it looked at immediately and avoid driving it.
